KP: Tell me about the church picnics

CT: There'd be a picnic at the church. They'd have bag races and they'd have bingos and they'd have wheel of fortune and they'd set out those booths outside. That would go all afternoon and into the evening. There'd be a ballgame or two, perhaps. Then the big supper would come on. Then after the supper everything would be cleaned up and the dances would start. They went into the hall, the Parish Hall. That’s where the hall came in. As I said that’s where they had the suppers and the parties, in the Parish Hall. And then after the Parish Hall was over, after the meal was over in the Parish Hall they cleaned her all up and they’d go dancing then – started two o’clock that afternon and go till midnight, maybe. Then they’d have auctioneers – Auction of cakes (laughs). Your wife would make a cake and you had to buy it back or you weren't safe to go home (laughs)! Of course, them times too, there was quite a bit of drinking went on with the home made brew and the home made ‘shine. Generally there might be a little row or two before the night would be out. Some fellow wouldn't agree with the other and the fists would start flyin' or something (laugh). Jack Webster, Jack would be there and we would have some old beer – We’d get him out, he loved beer. And we'd give him the beer, but we'd always stay around him, we never let him anything happen to him.You had to protect the fiddler oh yes, oh yes.
