About this tune

Maple Sugar is played by fiddlers throughout Prince Edward Island.

Composer Allen haled from the Ottawa Valley region in southeastern Ontario. In the late 40s he began appearing as a soloist and backup musician on a radio station out of Wingham, Ontario called CKNX, and in 1953 he won the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship at Shelburne, Ontario. He started recording for Spartan records in 1954. In 1956, Maple Sugar was released for the first time as the flip side of a 45 rpm disk; it was an immediate hit and was later re-released as the title cut of an LP called Maple Leaf Hoedown.
